Recently, I took a selfie from an unusual angle and I deliberately avoided making eye contact with the camera. It allowed me to discover a side of myself I had never truly seen. The experiment serves as a reminder that getting to know ourselves better takes intentional effort.
Our self-awareness journey is akin to peeling back the layers of an onion. Each layer reveals a new facet of our personality, desires, and fears. That’s where the support of a coach comes in.
In our journey of self-discovery, a coach can support us in recognizing blind spots we never knew existed. These blind spots are the areas of our lives where our perceptions and reality don’t align. It’s human nature to have them, but they can hinder our personal growth, if left unexamined.
A coach can serve as a mirror that reflects our true self, not the idealized version of self that we may project to the world. With such support, we can navigate the layers of our identity more effectively.
In order to embark on this journey of deeper self-discovery, we need to be cautious of the belief “I already know myself well enough”. While having confidence in our self-knowledge is healthy, it’s equally important to remain humble and open to continuous growth and self-discovery. Even the most experienced explorers still discover new things in familiar territories.
We also need to break free from the fear of what we might uncover. Facing our flaws and imperfections can be intimidating. However, self-awareness is not about judgment. It’s about growth.
